The full 2026 corpus of Grodzenskaya Prauda shows that the border coverage of a Belarusian regional state newspaper is almost entirely timetables and queues. Columns about a military threat from Poland and Lithuania travel in the same stream.<\/p>\n

Over eight months of 2026 the regional state newspaper Grodzenskaya Prauda published 6,703 items. Poland or Lithuania are mentioned in 594 of them, under nine per cent, and most of that nine per cent is not about politics at all: border-crossing queues, roads running “to the border of the Republic of Poland”, traffic restrictions. Yet in the same stream, under the same sections, run opinion columns claiming that the neighbours are preparing an attack. Those columns are the subject of this analysis.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What we counted<\/strong><\/p>\n

Grodzenskaya Prauda (grodnonews.by) is the newspaper of the Grodno regional executive committee. The region borders both Poland and Lithuania; it holds the main crossing points and the Suwa\u0142ki corridor. For a local reader the border is not foreign policy but everyday infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The publication’s full output for 2026 was loaded into the FORESIGHT analytical system: 6,703 items from 1 January to 28 August, including everything unrelated to the neighbours. For each text we recorded the attribution line (“Source: X”, where given), the site section, and whether Poland or Lithuania are named directly.<\/p>\n

Completeness matters here. A share can only be computed when the denominator is known, and most of the statements below are comparative: a layer measured against the paper, not a layer on its own.<\/p>\n

What those 594 items consist of<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first thing the full corpus shows is that the neighbour segment is not a stream of propaganda but mostly service information. Almost half of these items report how many cars are queuing at Beniakoni, where traffic is closed, and what is happening with paperwork.<\/p>\n

The second is the direction of dependence. Across the paper as a whole, no source is given for 62.9% of items. In the segment where the neighbours are mentioned it is 56.7%, meaning the newsroom leans on outside suppliers more<\/em> than usual here: queues come from the border guards, traffic restrictions from the road police, events next door from agencies.<\/p>\n

This refutes the hypothesis we started with. The border agenda of a regional state newspaper is not produced locally; it is assembled from other people’s reporting more densely than the rest of the paper. What is local is not the segment but a narrow genre inside it.<\/p>\n

The columns: what they look like and where they sit<\/strong><\/p>\n

We do not put a number on the opinion layer, and the limitations section explains why. It can be described precisely, though, because it is recognisable from the first line: capitalised headlines, emotive labels, military metaphor. Over eight months there were several dozen such texts, a handful a month rather than a stream.<\/p>\n

They do not sit where one might expect. The Transport section produces the most mentions of the neighbours, 153 items, and it is entirely timetables and queues. The columns appear in World and, more tellingly, in Life: the same feed that carries reports from farming villages, rescue-service stories and festival notes. That is where the text about Polish missiles discussed below also ran.<\/p>\n

Hence the structure of the effect. A reader in the Grodno region comes to the paper for the practical: how many cars are at the crossing, when it reopens, what the paperwork for working in Poland requires. In the same stream, under the same section, they are handed a text saying that a weapon is being forged across the border for use against their region. The service layer does not accompany the opinion layer; it supplies its audience.<\/p>\n

Three lines<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Volhynia wedge.<\/strong> “Warsaw \u2013 Kyiv: the bloody root of discord”, “The butchers of Volhynia”, “Bandera and the Volhynia massacre: Poland speaks out against neo-Nazism in Ukraine”, “Patience has run out. Why Poland demands the European Parliament condemn the UPA”. The target is not the Belarusian audience in the narrow sense but Polish-Ukrainian solidarity: a real historical trauma in Polish society is used as a ready-made fracture point. The line falls almost entirely in June and July.<\/p>\n

Militarisation of the neighbours.<\/strong> “The brave boar on the brink of madness: why NATO is turning the Suwa\u0142ki corridor into a powder keg”, “The Lithuanian Leopard: why a tank plant is being built in Kaunas”, “Lithuania is closing its schools for NATO’s sake”, “Wiped off the map! Whole villages demolished in Lithuania for a secret training ground”, “Peace-loving Europe: drones instead of textbooks and soldiers instead of teachers”.<\/p>\n

Inside this line sits a technique that was not in our original hypothesis: the systematic amplification of discontent within the neighbouring society. Protests by residents of Kap\u010diamiestis against a military training ground, objections from Lithuanian teachers, environmental complaints about construction, all of it retold in the neighbours’ own voices and presented as proof that their state is aggressive. The material is not invented. It is selected.<\/p>\n

Delegitimising the neighbours’ elites.<\/strong> “The shadow cordon: how Lithuania’s generals profit from tobacco smuggling”, “A Polish colonel milked the defence budget for years”, “The tale of how the Polish foreign ministry turned the border into a thoroughfare”, “Polish hypocrisy: why the fence is built against Belarusians while Ukrainians ferry the migrants in”, and a series on weather balloons carrying contraband, behind which, in the paper’s telling, stand Lithuanian border guards. The accusations come without documentary sourcing.<\/p>\n

A separate observation.<\/strong> One of the columns, “Secret manoeuvres in Podlasie: why is the Polish army afraid of publicity?”, does carry a source: the Polish defence-sector outlet portalobronny.se.pl. The piece is built on a Polish publication rewritten to mean the opposite. The technique is the same as in the case below, only here the original is named.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The case: 26 August<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 21 August 2026 Poland’s defence minister W\u0142adys\u0142aw Kosiniak-Kamysz, briefing on two years of the East Shield programme, announced the development of an East Sword strand. In the minister’s wording the task is deterrence, since long-range precision capability is central to the country’s security. The same briefing covered border fortifications, engineering barriers and co-funding for hospitals in the north-eastern voivodeships.<\/p>\n

On 26 August Grodzenskaya Prauda published “IN THE CROSSHAIRS \u2013 THE UNION STATE: long-range missile systems to be deployed in eastern Poland”<\/a>. Section: Life. No source given.<\/p>\n
